Mackenzie Hall Wedding Photos: A Photographer's Guide
Mackenzie Hall is one of my favourite places to photograph a wedding in Windsor. Here's how I'd plan your photos there.

One light, a little smoke, and the two of you.
Mackenzie Hall is one of my favourite places to photograph a wedding in Windsor. It's a limestone courthouse from the 1850s, built by Alexander Mackenzie before he became Canada's second prime minister, sitting in one of the most historic parts of the city on Sandwich Street West. Old stone, big windows and a garden gazebo out back. It basically does half my job for me.
I've photographed weddings here, so here's how I'd plan your photos at Mackenzie Hall.
The Gazebo ceremony
The Victorian Gazebo sits in the landscaped park right beside the hall, with flowers and mature trees around it. It's a popular spot for warm-weather ceremonies, and it's great for photos: you get greenery behind you instead of a parking lot.
My tip: ask about ceremony time early. Mid-afternoon sun can be harsh, while a later ceremony gives you softer light and fewer squinting guests. The hall reserves a rain-alternate room when you book, so you're covered if the weather turns.
Portraits on the limestone
The front of the building is the classic shot: pale limestone, classic revival lines and that old-courthouse look. It photographs beautifully in soft light and looks timeless, not trendy. We'll use the stone, the doorways and the trees in the park for couple portraits and your wedding party, all within a short walk, so you're not losing an hour driving between locations.
The Court Auditorium reception
Your reception is likely in the Court Auditorium, the old courtroom on the second floor. It has 20-foot ceilings, hardwood floors and tall windows, and it seats up to 135 at round tables. High ceilings mean the room feels big and airy in photos, and the tall windows give us lovely natural light for details and speeches before it gets dark.
For smaller weddings, the Main Gallery on the main floor seats up to 48, with high ceilings and dimmable lighting. It's perfect for an intimate dinner.
The night portrait
Once it's dark, we'll slip outside for my signature backlit night portrait whenever the weather and timing line up. Historic stone and park trees make an amazing backdrop for it. It takes a few minutes, and it's usually the photo couples end up framing.
Timing tips for Mackenzie Hall
- Plan portraits around the light. I'll help you build a timeline so your couple photos happen in soft, late-day light, not at noon. My golden hour timeline guide shows how.
- Keep it walkable. Ceremony, portraits and reception can all happen on site, which means more photos and less travel.
- Have a rain plan. The rain-alternate room is already part of the booking, and I'll scout indoor spots with good window light too.
