"How much does a wedding photographer cost?" is one of the first things couples google, and it's one of the hardest questions to get a straight answer to. Plenty of photographers hide their prices until you've filled out a form and booked a call. I'd rather just tell you. Here's what wedding photography costs with me in Chatham-Kent and Windsor, what you get at each level, and how to choose without overspending.

The short answer

My collections start at $895 and go up to $3,200. The biggest thing that changes the price is how many hours you need me there. Here's the full list:

  • Elopement, $895: up to 2 hours. Perfect for a courthouse wedding, a backyard ceremony or just the two of you.
  • Essential, $1,800: up to 6 hours. Ceremony, portraits and a good chunk of the party.
  • Signature, $2,400: up to 8 hours, plus an engagement session. This is the one most couples pick.
  • Full Day, $3,200: up to 10 hours, plus an engagement session. First coffee to last dance.

Every collection includes professionally edited photos and an online gallery for viewing and sharing. The Essential, Signature and Full Day collections also include help building your timeline. And every collection includes my signature backlit night portrait, when weather and timing allow.

What you're actually paying for

It's easy to look at a price and think, "That's a lot for one day." But the wedding day is only part of the work. Behind every gallery there's:

  • Planning: emails, questions and building a timeline that works with your venue and the sunset.
  • The day itself: being in the right place for every moment, keeping family photos moving, and finding the best light.
  • Editing: going through every photo, choosing the best ones and editing them so the whole gallery looks consistent.
  • Delivery: an online gallery that's easy to share with family. Sneak peeks and your full gallery arrive the week after your wedding.
  • Peace of mind: 11+ years photographing weddings, professional gear, and full insurance.

Your photos are one of the few things from your wedding that get better with time. The flowers fade and the cake gets eaten, but you'll be showing these photos to your kids.

How many hours do you really need?

This is where most couples either overspend or come up short. A quick way to figure it out:

  1. Pick the first thing you want photographed. For most people, that's getting ready, about an hour before you're dressed.
  2. Pick the last thing. For many couples it's the first dance, cake and a little bit of the party.
  3. Count the hours between them, and add a little time for travel if your ceremony and reception are in different places.

For a typical Chatham-Kent wedding with getting ready, a ceremony, family photos, dinner, speeches and a little dancing, that usually lands at about 8 hours. That's why the Signature collection is the most popular. If you're having a smaller day without a long reception, 6 hours with Essential is often plenty. And if you're eloping or keeping it tiny, the 2-hour Elopement collection works beautifully, especially if you set it in the two hours before sunset.

Add-ons, if you need them

Most couples don't need extras, but two are available:

  • Extra hour of coverage: $250. Handy if your timeline runs just past your collection, or you want a bit more of the party.
  • Second photographer: $600. Useful for big guest lists, or if you want both of you photographed getting ready at the same time in different places.

Sometimes adding an hour to a smaller collection is a better fit than jumping up a level. Sometimes the bigger collection works out better, especially once you count the engagement session that comes with Signature and Full Day. I'm always happy to help you work out which makes more sense.

How payment works

No surprises here either. A $300 deposit holds your date. It's non-refundable and comes off your total. The balance is due 30 days before the wedding, by e-transfer. That's it. Nothing extra shows up later.

Ways to get more from your budget

  • Keep everything close together. Getting ready, ceremony and reception in one place, or close by, means fewer hours lost to driving.
  • Plan around the light. A ceremony time that puts portraits near golden hour gives you better photos in less time.
  • Make a family photo list. Eight to ten groupings, handed to one helper who knows everyone, keeps it to about 20 minutes.
  • Don't book more hours than you'll use. If the dance floor is mostly done by 10, you probably don't need coverage until midnight.
  • Use the engagement session. If your collection includes one, it's a free warm-up. You'll be far more relaxed in front of the camera on the big day.

Questions to ask any photographer

Whoever you book, it's worth asking these:

  • What exactly is included, and is there anything I'd pay for later?
  • When will I get my photos?
  • Are you insured?
  • Can I see a full wedding gallery, not just the highlights?
  • What happens if my timeline runs long?

For me, the answers are easy: everything's listed on the pricing page, your gallery arrives the week after your wedding, I'm fully insured, the portfolio shows plenty of real work, and extra hours are $250 each.
