Engagement Photo Ideas in Chatham-Kent & Windsor
Where to go, what to wear and why an engagement session is the best warm-up for your wedding day, with local ideas from Chatham-Kent to Windsor.

An engagement session is one of my favourite parts of the whole wedding experience. It's relaxed, it's fun, and it gives you beautiful photos for your save-the-dates, your wedding website or just your living room wall. Best of all, it's a warm-up for the big day. Here are my favourite engagement photo ideas around Chatham-Kent and Windsor, plus tips on what to wear and how to feel comfortable in front of the camera.
Why an engagement session is worth it
Most couples tell me they "aren't photogenic" or feel awkward in front of a camera. That's completely normal. An engagement session fixes that. You get to know how I work, I learn what makes you laugh, and by the end you've stopped thinking about the camera. On your wedding day, you'll walk into portraits already knowing what to do, and it shows in the photos.
An engagement session is included with the Signature (8 hours, $2,400) and Full Day (10 hours, $3,200) collections. You can see everything that comes with each one on the pricing page.

Local engagement photo ideas
Sunset at Mitchell's Bay
Mitchell's Bay looks west over Lake St. Clair, so the sun sets right over the water. If you love warm, glowing light and a big open sky, this is a beautiful choice. It's one of my favourite places for engagement sessions in Chatham-Kent.
Downtown Chatham
Brick walls, storefronts, the Thames running through town and street lamps after dark. Downtown is perfect if you want a more stylish, urban feel. Grab a coffee or an ice cream, walk around, and let the photos happen naturally.
Your wedding venue
Doing your engagement session where you're getting married is a smart move. You'll see the best spots ahead of time, and we can plan your wedding day portraits around them. Some venues welcome it. For example, Links of Kent offers the use of its grounds and gazebo for engagement photos. Ask your venue what they allow.
The Windsor riverfront
For Windsor couples, the riverfront gives you water, the bridge and the Detroit skyline all in one. Go for golden hour, then stay a few minutes after sunset when the city lights come on.
Willistead Park in Walkerville
Big trees, open lawns and a grand old manor in the background. The City of Windsor says photo sessions in Willistead Park are free, first come, first served. Spring and fall are especially pretty.
A farm, a field or a country road
If you grew up out here, or you just love the countryside, a family farm or a quiet country road at sunset is hard to beat. Bring the dog, the pickup truck or the cowboy boots. The more it feels like you, the better.
Somewhere that means something
Where did you have your first date? Where did you get engaged? Your favourite park, your go-to coffee shop or even your own backyard can make for photos that feel personal, not posed.

What to wear
- Wear what you'd wear on a nice date. If you feel good in it, you'll look good in it.
- Coordinate, don't match. Pick two or three colours that go together, instead of matching shirts.
- Go easy on busy patterns and big logos. They can pull attention away from your faces.
- Think about the setting. Soft, flowy fabrics look great in fields and by the water. Jackets and boots fit right in downtown.
- Bring a second outfit if you want a different look. A quick change in the car is all it takes.
The best time of day
Almost always, the hour or two before sunset. The light is warm and soft, and nobody is squinting. In the summer that means an evening session. In the fall and spring it's late afternoon. If you're both early birds, sunrise works beautifully too, and the parks are usually empty.
How to feel comfortable in front of the camera
- Forget about posing. I'll give you simple prompts, like walking together or whispering something silly, and the real moments come from there.
- Bring a prop if it helps. A blanket, a coffee, your dog or a bottle of bubbly gives your hands something to do.
- Plan something fun after. Book dinner for after the session. You'll be dressed up anyway, and it turns the evening into a date.
- Have a rain plan. Clear umbrellas or a covered spot can make rainy sessions some of the most romantic.
When to book it
Most couples do their session anywhere from a few months to a year before the wedding. If you want the photos for save-the-dates, aim for at least six months out so you have time to print and mail them. If you're doing it mostly as a warm-up, closer to the wedding works great too.
Think about the season, too. Spring brings blossoms and fresh green leaves, summer gives you long golden evenings, and fall around here means warm colours in the trees and crisp, comfortable weather. Winter sessions can be beautiful as well, especially downtown with the holiday lights. Pick the season that feels most like the two of you.
